This kitchen was very small and divided by walls from the family room and breakfast
area. The family wanted to have it opened up to the breakfast area and the back
french doors that they used most of the time. They also wanted to open up the
kitchen but still retain space for storage. We reversed the kitchen from facing
the front of the home, and the formal dining room, to facing the back and the
family room and breakfast area. This configuration allowed us to move the traffic
flow into the formal dining area to one side of the kitchen, instead of crossing
through it, and gave us space for a wall fo cabinetry flanking the refrigerator.
The kitchen is now a central part of the activity of the home, and easily accessible
from the family room. We installed a wall of cabinets in the formal dining area
to give the family more room to store their fine china and crystal nearby. The
peninsula in the kitchen opens it up, but still allows for storage cabinets
underneath, and a counter to sit at if they choose. |
